Each week while we have been sheltering in place, I have shared a different organization post. I’ve shared Five Tips to the Perfectly Organized Pantry, 10 Tips to Organize Your Closet Like a Pro and this week I’m sharing How to Switch over your Closet for the Season.
I’ve put together five tips on how to switch over your closet for the season. It is my goal to get this done in my closet this week and I’ll take you along on Instagram Stories, too. I saved the Instagram Q&A with Tonia Tomlin on getting my closet organized on the Stories Highlights so you can watch them at any time. So many of you said that was so helpful! You can also see the full closet reveal here.
I’m also going to apply these tips to my girls closets as well. Each of them are old enough to help with the task and is definitely another great learning opportunity. There have been so many while we’ve been quarantined! 🙂
Five Tips on How to Switch Over Your Closet for the Season
1 Deep Clean the Closet – Remove everything from the shelves and drawers. Wipe them all down with anti-bacterial wipes or spray. Don’t forget the bottom of each hanging section if they are wood as well. (Note: Anti-bacterial cleaners are difficult to come by right now you can use something like Mrs. Meyers or Thieves Cleaning Concentrate which I use to clean at home a lot anyway. The essential oils leave a light fresh scent, too!) Vacuum or mop the floor of the closet. Wipe down the top and drawer fronts of your island or packing station if you have that as well.
2 Evaluate Each Piece Create Four Groups: Keep, Tailor/Repair/Clean, Donate and Sell – Ideally you did this when the season was over last year. Even if you did, do it again. Yes, again. Remove anything you haven’t worn in a year, looks worn, doesn’t fit or you know you won’t wear. Don’t forget to do this for your with your shoes, scarves and handbags, also. Take anything to get repaired or cleaned. Donate others to a local charity. Sell any items that are in very good condition at a resale or with Poshmark. I either take my things to a local resale shop, Clotheshorse Anonymous or list them on my Poshmark account. If you don’t have a Poshmark account, this is a great time to think about it!
3 Rotate this season to the front of your closet – Whether you have a large or small closet, organizing your clothing by season, helps make getting dressed and out the door quick and easy. If you have sections in your closet, designate one for Spring/Summer Tops, Dresses and Jackets and another for Winter Tops, Dresses and Jackets. I hang jeans in one section in the middle. I move the current season the the front of my closet after I do the sorting above.
4 Label Baskets or Bins – If you have anything in a basket or bin, make sure to have them labeled. I find if I don’t, I forget where they are!
5 Evaluate Storage Solutions – Look at the way you store items. Are they working for you? Right now I have a beautiful jewelry box that my husband gave me as a gift. It helps me organize all of my pieces but “Out of Sight, Out of Mind!” I rarely wear so many of my favorite pieces because I can’t see them! I will be reorganizing my jewelry this week and will share that with you once I have it redone. Also, I have my clutch bags stored in a bin and it’s another “Out of Sight, Out of Mind!” situation. I’ll be redoing this as well and using something like this on the shelves where I store handbags.

Here is a boutique of all the items I used in my closet and others I recommend. I also included the jewelry organizers I’ve ordered. I can’t wait until they arrive! Getting things like this done around the house are making the time go much more quickly!
