Pretty interestingly, when I asked last week what you wanted to see on the blog, all three topics were almost an exact tie! I shared 21 Best Puffer Jackets yesterday and as you wished, 5 Tips for Organizing and Storing Jewelry today.
When we originally organized my closet with Tonia from Sorted Out, we used the jewelry box I had. I searched high and low for a beautiful jewelry box and asked for it for my birthday right after we remodeled our home. It has spaces for all types of jewelry and I knew it would be a the perfect solution for my things and a beautiful way to store them on my dresser in my closet. Well, organized? Yes. Beautiful? Yes? Practical? Not so much…
Before I had this jewelry box, my jewelry had all been in a drawer in organizers. It was so much easier to see it all. While I love this jewelry box it actually kept me from wearing my jewelry! Out of sight, out of mind is certainly me! I’m that way in most areas of my life as well.
I decided last fall when I was switching my closet over for the seasons, that I would make organizing and storing my jewelry in a way that I could see it and wear it a priority.
I used clear stackable drawers from The Container Store to create a custom jewelry box that perfectly fit my things and my need to see it so I could wear it. These organizers are listed as make up organizers but after using them for my oldest daughter’s dorm room and my middle daughter’s bathroom, I knew they were the right product for this project as well. My middle daughter uses hers as a combination of make up and jewelry storage. Talk about smart and efficient!
Here are my 5 Tips for Organizing and Storing Jewelry:
Purge – Get out all of your jewelry and decide what you will actually wear. Like with closet organizing, if you’ve not worn it in a year or don’t see yourself wearing it again, put it aside. Either donate or sell these items at your favorite resale shop or on Poshmark.
Clean and Send for Repair – Inspect all of your jewelry to make sure it is all in good shape. If it needs repair, take it to your local jeweler or a dedicated jewelry repair shop. I use this Magnasonic Cleaner from Amazon to clean my jewelry at home. It is fast and easy! Nothing sparkles like a clean gem!
Organize by type then by color and style – Type: Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, watches, etc. the by color and style. These two steps will allow you to see what kind and shape containers you need. I’ve been building my jewelry collection for decades and have a lot of pieces that I love and wear (now that I can see them!)
Hang necklaces – Hanging your necklaces will not only allow you to see them but keep them from getting tangled. Here is what I use to hang mine! I have quite a few dainty necklaces that are headed to the jeweler to get untangled! They are such a mess I can’t do it myself!
Create Your Personalized Stack – Based on the amount of space you need, create your custom jewelry box using the acrylic stacking boxes with drawers in the boutique below. I used 2 large drawers on the bottom: 1 for chunky necklaces and the other for wide bracelets and watches; 12 of the small drawers to sort rings and small earrings in; 6 of the wide drawers for larger hoop earrings and chain bracelets. I used 2 bracelet stands for bangles and my Hazen bracelets and 2 necklace hangers.
I hope these tips and this system are helpful for you. I’d love to know what you found most helpful and if you use these containers as well.
