I have been a fan of self-tanners since I was in my early 20s. I love spending time outdoors but I am a fanatic about protecting myself and my family from the sun. My partnership with Cabana Life evolved from this!
The first clean self-tanner that I found was Chocolate Sun. I have shared it a few times on Instagram stories. It is so easy that an eight-year-old can use it. I know this because my youngest daughter did! I tucked her into bed one night and thought she smelled like a chocolate chip cookie and couldn’t figure out what it was. And the next morning I realize she had a golden tan on her legs and arms!
Chocolate Sun is a natural, organic, sunless tanning lotion. Chocolate Sun is handcrafted from organically grown and wild botanical herbs, pure essential oils and all-natural preservatives. It is based in Santa Monica, California and opened a salon in 2003 and began sharing their sunless tanning and body care collection in 2005. The original has a very faint chocolate fragrance. It also comes in citrus and unscented. I use # 3 Absolute Sun.
Beauty by Earth Self Tanner is a new find for me. It is easy to apply and produces a nice healthy glow. Beauty by Earth is a clean skincare brand dedicated to organic, natural and non-toxic skincare. They also make a face-specific self-tanner and a dry shampoo that I look forward to trying.
The next two tanners are from a company called Vita Liberata. I have tried their 10-minute tan (now discontinued) and their foaming water. With the other tanners, I usually do them in the evening after I take a shower. This is a great option when you need a tan and you need it quick!
I’ll be sharing my process for how I use these great products but the key is exfoliation, exfoliation, exfoliation! The Beautycounter Sugar Scrub and also the Absolute Sun Cocoa Caramel Body Scrub are two of my favorite pre-self-tanning exfoliators.
As you know clean beauty is a big focus for me. You can find more of my clean beauty favorites for summer here, my clean beauty summer skincare routine and more on clean beauty on the menu bar above.
As always I love your feedback so let me know if you’ve used these or if you have other favorite clean self-tanners I should know about!
XO

P.S.-Clean skin care is truly important to me. We all try to watch what we put in our bodies but we need to also take care of what we put on our skin which is our largest organ. You can read more about why clean beauty is important here. My Clean Summer Skincare routine is a great one to check out if you need some new products to try. Plus, don’t forget to protect your skin with my favorite Clean Sunscreens!

Hi Alicia, I really enjoy reading articles about self tanner as I use them all summer. I have used Vita Liberata with good results I also love Isle of Paradise self tanning drops, you can control how dark you want to go you just mix the drops into your moisturizer and I love the golden glow I get. The bottle is small but it lasts a long time as you are just using a few drops.
Thanks for all the great self tanner product suggestions. Is there a particular mitt you like to use to apply these products?
Hi Melody
I just use my hands and apply like body lotion. Be sure to wash your hands and cuticles thoroughly!
