What I Wore in Cape Town and Hermanus South Africa

by | Packing Lists, Travel | 1 comment

We had such a wonderful trip to South Africa with our best friends!  I’m working on updating my Cape Town Travel Guide as well as creating one for Hermanus and the Hemel-en-Aard Wine Valley.  Today, I’m sharing What I Wore in Cape Town and Hermanus.

Travel Day

Favorite White T / Pants / Quarter Zip(tied around my waist) / Sneakers / Carry-on Suitcase / The BEST Travel Tote Bag

As I shared in my Favorite Travel Outfits post, this is the most comfortable travel set.  The Spanx AirEssentials pants and quarter zip are two of my most worn pieces for travel and for around the house on a chilly day. This fabric is very unique, cozy but cool.  That said, I changed into the long black Tshirt dress below to sleep and then also wore it in the Doha Airport.  Unlike some airlines who freeze you out, Qatar and the Doha Airport were more temperate.  I was so glad that I had both for this super long travel day of 30+ hours.

First Day in Cape Town

Similar Cropped Khaki Jacket / Printed Long Sleeved Top / White Denim here and here / Sandals / Similar Crossbody

Once we checked in to the fabulous Ellerman House, I changed into my favorite white denim and a light printed top and went straight to lunch and the V&A Waterfront.  Once it got late in the day, I threw on a light jacket.

Sheridan French Pink and Orange Maxi Dress / Raffia Bag / Similar Sandals

This dress style is a favorite and the print was perfect for our first Cape Town sunset dinner at Ellerman House overlooking the ocean.  I carried the same raffia bag throughout the trip.  A neutral bag and shoe like these go with everything and simplify packing.

Second Day in Cape Town

White Ruffle Top here and here / Light Wash Denim / Sneakers

Jeans and sneakers were perfect for our day touring Table Mountain and Cape of Good Hope.  These light wash jeans are some of my very favorites that I featured here from MerSea. The are so comfortable and flattering. I had the same khaki jacket with me also but even though it is the beginning of their winter season, it was warm and high 70s in the sunshine.  These sneakers are my favorite and so comfortable for walking all day!

Cobalt Newport Midi Dress / Raffia Bag / Similar Sandals

This dress is in the gorgeous cobalt blue from Brochu Walker.  It’s a new style and so good!  It perfectly matched the sunset also!  I love the staple Brochu Walker fabric.  It travels like a dream!  I wore this our second night at Ellerman House as we celebrated a bit early the 25th Anniversary of my husband’s company with his co-founder and his wife who are our best friends.  It was a special night!

First Day in Hermanus

Black Tshirt Dress / Sandals

Our third day we transferred to Birkenhead House, a beachfront property about 2 hours from Cape Town.  We just took in the views and enjoyed a great lazy girls lunch while the boys went on a boat excursion. This is the GREAT tshirt dress I wore traveling and several times on the trip.  We did laundry at almost every stop which is so nice!

Navy Blue Embroidered Dress (this color is sold out but here are other colors) / Raffia Bag / Similar Sandals

I wore this beautiful Julia Armory dress for dinner our first night at Birkenhead House. The embroidery is fantastic and her things are so well made. I’m obsessed with JA dresses so get ready to see a lot of them!

Second Day in Cape Town

Navy Strapless Dress with Colorful Stripes / Raffia Bag / Similar Sandals / Gold Wrap

I wore this to dinner after our totally relaxing day at Birkenhead House.  I love a great detail and this colorful striped skirt caught my eye the minute I saw it hanging in Saint Bernard.  I knew, even though I have fairly similar navy dress from last summer, this would be coming home with me!  The colors make it special.

(I forgot to take a photo of what I wore on this lazy day at Birkenhead House.  tI was a mix of jeans and a top and the tshirt dress so nothing special. I had a spa day while the others hiked!)

Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley

Blue and White Striped Dress / Sandals

We spent the day in the Hermel-en-Aarde wine valley for my husband’s birthday.  It was stunning!  More details coming!  This dress is really great and beautiful fabric but runs large.  I wish I’d sized down but didn’t have time before we left to exchange it. I’m taking it to be tailored this week.

Special Birthday Dinner

White Asymmetrical Dress with Colorful Stripes / Raffia Bag / Similar Sandals

We had a special birthday dinner at Birkenhead House on our last night.  I found this dress the day before we left and quickly changed my packing plans!  I love the asymmetrical cut, the draping of the fabric, different directions of the striped…really everything about this dress!  I asked Scott to choose which dress I wore for his birthday dinner and this was his favorite of what I brought.  I know I’ll wear it a lot this Summer and even in the Fall while it’s still hot here.

Overall, I loved everything I packed for this part of our trip.  Again, this is the beginning of their Winter season but was like the most perfect “California” weather while we were there.  We did get lucky as the three days before we arrived in Cape Town were rainy and much cooler.  We did have other layers with us for our cool safari mornings so we were prepared.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this trip and I’ll be sure to address them in the blog posts that are coming soon!

This trip seemed magical, so many beautiful destinations and sights. Congratulations on 25 years in business!
You looked beautiful in your outfits- everything fits and styled to perfection.
    Two questions:
    1. Do you need to get your clothes altered? I ask because as someone who is 5’2” and short waisted, that unless something is in petite it often needs to be altered. For example, The Evereve tee shirt dress fit you beautifully. I actually prefer the long length on you vs how shown on the online model. The armholes are too large, deep. Anyway, curious if you need alterations.
    2. You shared an Amazon bag insert for your MZ Wallace bag. Can you please share a link? Thanks much, Deb
